Flashback: Smart an All-Australian
September 23, 1991 – Adelaide defender Nigel Smart was the lone Crow named in the inaugural AFL All-Australian team.
The team was announced on the same night as the Brownlow Medal count, with 22-year-old Smart picked in a back pocket alongside competition stars Anthony Daniher (Essendon) and Guy McKenna (West Coast).
“It was a bit of a shock, I didn’t really expect to be picked,” said Smart, who was recruited from South Adelaide and played 20 games in his first AFL season.
“I’ve looked up to some of the players named in the team for years, so it’s a real honour to be named with them. Paul Roos, Tony Lockett, Stewart Loewe and Mark Bairstow are guys I have watched for years - it’s pretty hard to believe. I didn’t even know they had this team.”
Adelaide’s top votegetter in the 1991 Brownlow Medal count was ruckman Mark Mickan, who polled 14 votes. Next best Crow was Andrew Jarman, with 11.
The winner, Melbourne ruckman Jim Stynes, received 25 votes.
