The Adelaide Football Club today confirmed that the Round three clash with Port Adelaide (the AFL’s Rivalry Round) will not be renamed and still be known as the 'Showdown'.
It needs to be made very clear that both the Adelaide Football Club and Carlton & United Beverages – the Club’s alcohol beverage partner – have at all times (in reaching this conclusion) been extremely mindful of the culture and tradition that has been built up over 8 years of Showdowns.
CUB – despite speculation to the contrary – have not pushed the Adelaide Football Club for naming rights to the Club's home game - a home game which can be branded as the Club sees fit. Rather, the delays in releasing the Club’s position on this matter, relate more specifically to the extent to which the existing name “Showdown” (as a name) can be used.
It is both the Club and CUB’s preference to see Showdown continue “unnamed” for these great clashes.
CUB GM-South Australia, Gary Kirwan, said:
“The rich tradition and fierce rivalry exhibited in these local clashes will no doubt continue, and it’s the view of CUB that these traditions should continue without commercial issues standing in the way. Our intention is to grow the tradition and support for football in South Australia.”
The Adelaide Football Club has had subsequent discussion with Port Adelaide Football Club, and both Clubs are committed to (further) continuing the tradition by presenting (on-field) a Trophy (to the winning side); and a Medal to the best player on the ground for each of these rounds going forward.
The two Clubs will work on names and the logistics of the trophy and the medal over the ensuing days.
Carlton & United Beverages will be the Club’s home-match sponsor for Round 3, and a range of activities, to include Crows Supporters will also be detailed in the next few days.
