Adelaide has scraped past West Coast by 13 points in a tough slog marred by wet and windy conditions at Football Park.

But the 8.16.64 to 7.9.51 win did little to suggest the Crows could be a top eight contender.

West Coast put veteran Peter Matera at fullback on Darren Jarman, and he made some costly errors to allow Jarman to kick two goals in the first quarter as the Crows jumped to an early lead.

With a strong wind blowing Adelaide's way in the first term, the Crows led 4.5.29 to 3.0.18 at quartertime, with Nigel Smart also starting the game in good form at half-forward.

The second quarter was one of the worst displays of AFL football seen this year, with players from both sides only managing to find a team-mate by foot on rare occasions.

The Eagles' Andrew Embley summed up most of the quarter when he took three bounces, running into goal uncontested in the ninth minute, then blasting his shot wide from 15 metres.

Later, full forward Scott Cummings had a set shot from 45 metres with the wind which went 20 metres wide of the goal face and failed to make the distance. He was benched soon after.

The two sides scored just one goal each for the term, both coming in the last two minutes.

Adelaide sealed the match in the third quarter with three goals to none.

Andrew McLeod, who had a solid game, scored the first goal of the term with a quality snap over his shoulder from 30 metres.

West Coast captain Ben Cousins continued his good recent form to be easily best afield, David Wirrpunda was a good performer in defence and attack, while Joshua Wooden, Richard Taylor and Rowan Jones also gave creditable performances.

Glen Jakovich was solid at centre half-back and forwards Phil Matera and Mark Merenda kicked two goals each, but few other Eagles had an impact on the match.

For Adelaide, youngster James Gallagher impressed on a wing and Ben Hart was able to run off opponent Phil Matera to gather plenty of kicks in defence, while Nathan Bassett was also solid in defence.

Tyson Edwards, Mark Bickley and Mark Ricciuto were other good players for the Crows and Jarman finished with three goals.
