Crows may rest players
Crows coach Brenton Sanderson has left the door open to resting players later in the season
ADELAIDE coach Brenton Sanderson has left the door open to resting players ahead of the club's likely finals tilt.
While Sanderson said he will continue to pick his best possible side each week for now, he hinted at a possible change in opinion later in the season.
"We'll pick them when we need them, we won't shuffle and flirt with our form too much [or] shuffle the team around just to bring a player in to expose him," Sanderson said.
"At this stage we'll manage players during the week and we won't give players matches off, but ask me that in six weeks and it might be a different answer."
The side has been blessed with a virtually non-existent injury list in 2012 and has used only 30 players this season, the equal-second lowest in the League behind Richmond (28).
But the coach said Adelaide had an extra 11 or 12 players outside of its best 22 who were capable of slotting straight in when needed.
"I reckon we've got a squad of at the moment 33 to 34 players who we could confidently pick that would come in and play good AFL footy," he said.
"[Depth was] something we talked about as coaches over the break.
"At the moment we're pretty much injury-free so we haven't had to test that depth yet."
The Crows face St Kilda on Friday night; the club's only Friday night game of the season.
While the Crows sit fifth with a win-loss record of 8-2, a win over the Saints could move them as high as first.
Sanderson agreed it was "strange" that a club as popular as the Crows should only have one Friday night game this season.
He said he would like his side to play more football in the prime timeslot and said Friday night's game was a chance to make a statement.
"Commercially it would be better for us if we had every game on a Friday night," he said.
"Hopefully we can play well [on Friday] and have a good second half of the season and hopefully next year we'll get a few more.
"From an Adelaide Football Club point of view it is a great opportunity to play well on Friday night against a good side."
