Craig predicts fully fit Goodwin
Adelaide coach Neil Craig says skipper Simon Goodwin is fully fit despite missing training on Thursday
Goodwin, who has been nursing a back injury and some general soreness, was put through a late fitness test last Friday before being cleared to play against Carlton and has been restricted to training indoors this week.
Craig said it was just a matter of getting Goodwin cherry ripe going into the business end of the season.
“We want to try and get Simon back to 100 per cent. He probably played at about 90 per cent last week. I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t play at 100 per cent this week and he just needed some time off the track for that to happen,” Craig said on Thursday.
“He’s feeling much better at the moment compared to this time last week, so I’m really confident he’ll be 100 per cent on Sunday, which will be great for him because it’s been a long season for him.
“A long pre-season and a long playing season. He’s played up forward, copped some good defenders, played different roles and he’s doing a great job in terms of the captaincy. It’s just been a timely little two weeks to just back him off.”
Nathan van Berlo and Richard Douglas were also limited to light sessions, but will play in Andrew McLeod's 300th game on Sunday.
Graham Johncock, who has spent the past two weeks in the SANFL, will also return this week after satisfying the leadership group's demands of better attention to detail in his preparation.
"Graham has been able to meet the requirements of the leadership group, the playing group and my requirements, as well, for the last two weeks. Now we need to make sure that's ongoing and that's up to us as a group to monitor that and keep in good communication with Graham," Craig said.
"We don't want this to be a short-term situation. We want this to be long-term and Graham understands that clearly. He would also understand the consequences of slipping back.
"His form in the SANFL has been exceptional, better than good, and with Jason Porplyzia and Chris Knights going out, I'd be very surprised if Graham didn't come back into the side."
Another of Adelaide's indigenous players could also line up this weekend with recently elevated rookie Jared Petrenko joining Kurt Tippett and Andy Otten in the mix for selection.
Brent Reilly is the obvious replacement for Knights, who will miss with a hamstring strain, but Craig said the unlucky onballer was unlikely to come straight back into the side after two long layoffs with wrist and knee injuries, respectively.
"It's a really interesting one. Brent has missed a lot of footy. He hasn't been able to get any continuity in playing. He's worked hard since he's been injured and it will be a tough call," Craig said.
"These days, to miss a lot of AFL football makes it really difficult to come back for any player. I've seen a little bit this year and towards the end of last year too with guys at our club who have had long-term injuries and we've brought back quickly; they've just struggled a bit.
"Brent isn't out of the picture, but there will be a lot of discussion as to whether we bring him straight back in. It fits beautifully, doesn't it, with Knights out and Reilly in, but we've got to think about how things will be going halfway through the second quarter, not what looks good on paper."
