Showdown a family affair
Brodie Smith says this Sunday's Showdown highlights a unique family rivalry
DESPITE growing up supporting Port Adelaide, Crows midfielder Brodie Smith said he turned "100 per cent Crow" the day he was drafted.
Smith lived just around the corner from AAMI Stadium and attended many Showdowns, but did so dressed in teal; not Crows colours.
However it seems not every member of the Smith family became diehard Crows fans when he was drafted with pick no. 14 at the 2010 NAB AFL draft; his father's still a Power supporter.
Smith's mother is an employee of the Adelaide Football Club, but Mr. Smith has remained a Port Adelaide fan despite his son's allegiances.
"He definitely supports us when we're not playing the Power, but it'll be interesting to see come Sunday night what his feelings are like after the game," Smith said.
"I hope he's 100 per cent Crow."
While his father's feelings are to be determined, Smith said coach Brenton Sanderson hadn't hidden his this week, claiming he was clearly relishing the intense build-up to the match.
Smith said Sanderson was "pumped" for the weekend's clash and had spoken to the players specifically about the rivalry associated with it.
"It's his first Showdown and he's really pumped to get out there and play a rival side," he said.
"The way he spoke about it today, about the rivalry, he's pretty excited for the weekend."
Adelaide will likely welcome Graham Johncock back into the side to face the Power after he sat out the clash against the Giants with a corked thigh.
Johncock moved well at training this week and Smith said his inclusion would bolster the young squad.
"He's so smart and knows how to play the game and obviously being one of the older players on the list he's played in so many Showdowns before and he's experienced," he said.
While the Crows have enjoyed a 3-1 start to the season - the exact opposite of Port's 1-3 start - Smith said the Power were a better side than their ladder position suggested.
"They're definitely paying better than a 1-3 side I think," he said.
"They gave Collingwood a good run on the weekend and Collingwood are one of the better teams in the competition."
Smith said Sunday's match would act as the club's second measuring stick this season, after it suffered a 56-point belting by premiership fancies Hawthorn in round three.
"Both teams are playing pretty good footy at the moment, Port have probably played a few harder opposition [sides] so I suppose it will give us an idea of where we're at at the moment," he said.
"To beat a good quality side and for 4-1 would be a great start to the season."
Regardless of the starts the Crows or the Power have made, Smith said when it came to a Showdown form counted for nothing.
"Both teams come out really firing wanting to have a crack … it doesn't matter how you're playing, it's going to be a good game," he said.
