Freier crosses codes
NSW Waratahs hooker Adam Freier has used his time ‘as a Crow’ to share ideas and learn from a different code of football.
Freier, who represents the Waratahs in the Rugby Union code, joined Adelaide’s squad for the three day camp at Strathalbyn.
“It has been really good, its been refreshing and there’s plenty of ideas,” Freier said. “The leadership group is just run so well (at the Crows). It’s a very similar format (to the Waratahs). There’s a few little differences but that’s what I’m here for, to pick up some things and also pass on some other ideas. It has worked both ways, it’s been really good.”
Waratahs coaching staff worked with the Crows early in the season, and also use leadership expert Ray McLean, who has significantly influenced the leadership structures of both clubs.
“They (Waratahs coaches) got a good idea of the (Adelaide) coaching scheme and things like that,” Freier said.
“My idea was to come down and have a look at team culture, their team leadership; which is very similar in both codes.”
Freier also noted a number of differences between the two codes.
“There’s always going to be subtle differences, just because of personalities and the different type of sport,” Freier said. “It’s harder for New South Wales because we break up mid-year to play for the Wallabies. So we have a six month program, whereas you guys have a 12 month one.”
However, despite significant differences between the skills required on the field, Freier eagerly took on all aspects of Crows training. He was particularly appreciative of the support he received from his ‘green team’ mates.
“Everyone has been great, especially the boys in my group, the green team,” he said. “I think we fell short at the end (of the competitions) but they helped me in all the drills, especially the triathlon the other day. Being 100kg and 175cm, I struggled doing that!
“It’s probably the first team I’ve been in where I’m the biggest bloke; I’m normally the littlest!”
