Nathan Bassett will become the eighth Crow to play 200 AFL games.
• He will become the eighth Crow to play 200 AFL games, following Mark Ricciuto, Ben Hart, Andrew McLeod, Tyson Edwards, Nigel Smart, Mark Bickley and Simon Goodwin. Of this group, Nathan is the only one to have spent time at another AFL club.
• A stand-out Norwood junior footballer, he was overlooked at two AFL national drafts (1995 and 1996) and by new SA club Port Adelaide before rookie-listed by Melbourne in February 1997. He had trained with Port before it chose its squad and then continued to train with the Power leading into the rookie draft.
• His younger brother Scott was selected by Port in its inaugural list (for 1997) and played 15 games before finishing his injury-restricted AFL career with 15 games at the Western Bulldogs.
• Nathan was promoted to Melbourne’s primary list early in the 1997 season – the first player to be upgraded from the rookie system - and was close to making his AFL debut but broke his sternum in his next VFL game.
• He was traded to Adelaide at the end of 1997, swapped for former Victorians Matthew Collins and Brent Williams.
• Nathan has worn the No 8 since he made his AFL debut, aged 21, for Adelaide against Carlton at Princes Park in the opening round of the 1998 season.
• He polled three Brownlow Medal votes in his fourth AFL game – the Showdown against Port in round four of 1998.
• He finished tenth in the Crows’ club champion voting in 1998, despite playing just 13 games. But he missed out on the finals and premiership through injury.
• Most of his AFL games have been played in defence – but he did kick three goals for Adelaide in the 2002 preliminary final against Collingwood at the MCG. His career total of goals is 24.
• Statistically, his busiest game was against Collingwood in round 18 2006 when he had 21 kicks, 10 handballs and took 22 marks.
