Exciting utility Ricky Henderson has celebrated his birthday by signing a new three-year deal.

Henderson, who turned 24 on Tuesday, has played 40 games in four years at Adelaide.

A late convert to Australian Rules, Henderson was spotted by Crows recruiter Hamish Ogilvie at a basketball talent identification camp in 2008. The former Ballarat Miners point-guard played a handful of games for Trentham in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League and was plucked by Adelaide with the Club’s first pick (No.10 overall) in the Rookie Draft in late 2008.

He made his debut against the Western Bulldogs in Round Five, 2010.

Crows List Manager David Noble said Henderson’s best football was ahead of him.

“For someone with a limited background in football, Ricky has come a long way in his short time with the Club,” Noble said.

“We believe he still has plenty of room to improve and are pleased he has committed to the Club for another three years.

“Rick’s versatility and outstanding speed make him a valuable member of our team.”

The 188cm, 91kg, athlete has played a variety of roles in his short career.

He amassed a career-high 28 disposals and nine marks against the Bulldogs last season playing as a wingman. In his most recent full game against Port Adelaide in Round 15 this year, he kicked a personal best six goals.

In a cruel blow, he injured his ankle against Greater Western Sydney the next week, and only returned to the field in the local league a fortnight ago.

However, he’s back in the selection mix to play Fremantle in the Semi-Final at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

Henderson joins Patrick Dangerfield, Taylor Walker, Rory Sloane, Jared Petrenko, David Mackay, Richard Douglas, Brodie Smith, Sam Shaw, Brodie Martin, Matt Jaensch and Jarryd Lyons in committing to Adelaide this year.
