Adelaide defender Tom Doedee is set to play his first AFL game in 448 days on Saturday night after being selected to face Port Adelaide in Showdown 48.
The 23-year-old ruptured his ACL in Round One, 2019, and suffered a setback ahead of this year’s season opener to push back his rehabilitation.
But with time on his side over the coronavirus shutdown, Doedee has proved himself fit and will be a welcome sight for fans in the Crows’ back six.
“What a delight it is to have Tommy back in the line-up," Crows Head of Football Adam Kelly said.
"His quality was highlighted during an outstanding 2018 season and has been reinforced by the way he has dedicated himself to his rehabilitation and supporting his teammates during his recovery."
Teenager Ned McHenry will make his AFL debut after being told the news by captain Rory Sloane after Thursday’s training session at West Lakes.
The Crows will also unveil two Club debutants, with rookie duo Ben Keays and Ben Crocker to pull on the tricolours after arriving from Brisbane and Collingwood respectively.
Keays played 30 games over four seasons with the Lions, while Crocker represented the Magpies on 26 occasions over the same period.
“With the debut of Ned, Crock and Keaysy, there have now been five debutants across our opening two games of the season," Kelly said.
"Ned brings a wonderful energy to our side on and off the field, he is really competitive and has worked extremely hard to earn his spot.
"The two Bens have demonstrated great respect for the opportunities presented to them on our Rookie list and have impressed all with their dedication and sacrifice.”
Taylor Walker will provide back-up ruck minutes to Reilly O’Brien with Billy Frampton omitted from the Round One side.
Ben Davis and Bryce Gibbs have also been omitted from the 22 that played in the Crows’ season opener.
“With 42 players available for selection, disappointment is inevitable. This week Benny, Bryce and Billy would be feeling that but they are not alone," Kelly said.
"There are a number of players who are close to selection and competition for spots is strong.
"This highlights the importance of the opportunities that the players have to impress in trial games that have been arranged with other AFL clubs for non selected players, starting Saturday against Port Adelaide.”
Tyson Stengle is unavailable for AFL selection for four matches as part of a Club-imposed sanction.
Adelaide's Round Two team is:
IN: Crocker, McHenry, Keays, Doedee
OUT: Stengle (club suspension), Gibbs, Frampton, Davis
