Adelaide midfielder Matthew Bode has had surgery to reconstruct his left shoulder and will not play again this season.

Bode played the first two AFL games this season before hurting his shoulder, and he received another heavy knock while playing for Glenelg in the SANFL last Saturday.

Adelaide said in a media release that it had been a mutual decision between the club and Bode to have the surgery immediately (on Thursday) rather than delay it until the end of the season.

John Reid, Adelaide's general manager of football operations, said it was a tough decision for both parties.

"It is a major operation and may require six months of rehabilitation," Reid said. "If Matthew waited until the end of the season for surgery, he probably would have missed all of the pre-season period.

"He is very disappointed to miss the rest of the season and the chance to fight for a spot back in the Crows' side, but he needed the operation. The sooner he has it, the quicker he will be ready to play."

Bode, 26, has played 84 AFL matches - 29 with Port Adelaide from 1998-2000 and 55 with Adelaide since 2001.
