Crows grand final hero Darren Jarman missed the street parade after the 1997 AFL premiership thanks to his “celebrations”, teammate Ben Hart has revealed.

Speaking on Adelaide Radio on Monday night, Hart said Jarman was left to sleep in the garden the night before the parade.

“He was revelling in some celebrations,” Hart said.

“(His wife) wouldn’t let him back in the house… he had to scale the fence to get in.

“All of us looked after him in 1998 and made sure he stuck to the mid-strength beers.

“We told him ‘there’s no way you’re missing this one’.”

Fast forward a year and Adelaide was struggling to defend its premiership following a heavy qualifying final loss to Melbourne.

“We didn’t just lose, we got embarrassed,” Hart said.

“It was a wake-up call heading to Sydney… it was a must win for us.

“Peter Vardy kicking six goals, had an unbelievable game and everything went right for us.

“He was outstanding that night and deserved to keep going and pushing on.”

After a 27-point win at the SCG, the Crows overcame the Western Bulldogs in a preliminary final for a second straight year.

“There was a feeling if we got away to a decent start we could crack them early,” Hart said,

“(Maybe) it was a psychological advantage because of the year before.”
