Eddie Betts has revealed just how difficult it is for young Indigenous footballers to adapt to the AFL lifestyle.
On this Sunday’s episode of The Crows Show, the star forward explains how cultural differences can be a huge barrier to some of these players reaching their full potential.
Betts said it was extremely tough for him when he first moved from the country town of Port Lincoln to the booming city of Melbourne.
He has obviously overcome this and thrived but he now makes it his mission to sure no one has to feel like that again.
“As a young Indigenous player it’s always good to have a senior Indigenous player at that club because you’re very shy, you don’t talk to anyone,” Betts said.
“If you’ve got a senior Indigenous player there you kind of bond with them straight away.”
Betts has assumed this role at the Crows, taking Charlie Cameron, Wayne Milera, Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Curtly Hampton and Ben Davis under his wing.
“I try to make my house a home away from home for these kids,” Betts said.
