For the second time in Club history, Adelaide holds pick No.12 in the AFL National Draft.
The 2017 National Draft will be held at the Sydney Showgrounds on Friday, November 24.
The Crows will enter the meet at No.12 – the pick they acquired from the Brisbane Lions as part of Charlie Cameron’s move north in the AFL Trade Period.
Adelaide has picked at No.12 just once before, selecting Brent Reilly in the 2001 National Draft.
The Calder Cannons recruit went on to play 203 AFL games, earning All Australian and NAB Rising Star nominations and receiving Life Membership at the Adelaide Football Club.
Some of the game’s most decorated players were taken with pick No.12 in the National Draft.
In 1989, Essendon selected skilful small defender Gavin Wanganeen at No.12.
Wanganeen won AFL premierships with both the Bombers (1993) and Port Adelaide (2004) during his brilliant 300-game career.
In 1993, Wanganeen won the Brownlow Medal and earned the second of his five All Australian crowns.
Pick 12 has produced another 300-gamer – Power and Hawthorn star Shaun Burgoyne.
Burgoyne, who was drafted in 2000, is about to enter his 17th AFL season. The skilful and versatile veteran has won four flags with the Hawks and Port Adelaide and is an All Australian.
Hawthorn teammates Cyril Rioli and James Frawley are also former pick 12s.
Selected by the Hawks in the 2007 National Draft, Rioli is a four-time premiership player, triple All Australian and won the 2015 Norm Smith Medal.
Frawley was originally recruited by Melbourne with pick No.12 in the 2002 National Draft. The All Australian backman has played 187 career games, including Hawthorn’s 2015 premiership.
Frawley’s former Demons teammate Nathan Jones was pick No.12 in 2005. The Melbourne co-captain has played 239 games and won three best and fairest awards.
Cyril Rioli and Shaun Burgoyne are both pick 12 success stories
Hard man Chris Scott won a best and fairest and two flags with Brisbane after being picked up with No.12 in the 1993 National Draft. Adam Ramanauskas, who was pick No.12 in 1998, was part of Essendon’s 2000 premiership win.
Fremantle and St Kilda midfielder Heath Black (192 games) and Richmond and Port Adelaide forward Jay Schulz (194 games) also carved out great careers after being drafted at No.12 in 1996 and 2002, respectively.
More recently, Carlton has been a beneficiary of pick 12.
The Lions made an astute selection in 2011, calling defender Sam Docherty’s name on draft night. At the end of 2013, Docherty sought a trade to the Blues where he has won a best and fairest award and earned All Australian selection as a damaging half-back flank.
Promising utility Charlie Curnow, who was taken by Carlton with pick No.12 in 2015, is also shaping as an excellent choice.
Richmond owned pick 12 in consecutive years (2013 – 2014), opting for Ben Lennon and Corey Ellis.
Exciting North Melbourne small forward Jy Simpkin is the most recent product of the pick.
In 2008, enigmatic goalkicker Lewis Johnston was selected by the Sydney Swans at No.12 – one selection ahead of ex-St Kilda utility Tom Lynch. Coincidentally, Lynch and Johnston both joined Adelaide in the 2011 Trade Period.
The Crows have had picks either side of No.12 in recent years. Club Champion and two-time All Australian Daniel Talia was called at No.13 in the 2009 National Draft, while talented Central District onballer Wayne Milera became a Crow with pick No.11 in 2015.
No.12 is the first of four available ‘live’ picks (12, 39, 75 and 94) Adelaide has in the 2017 National Draft.

Picks are subject to change on draft night as a result of father-son and academy bidding, and if clubs opt not to use all of their available picks.
Each pick is given a points value as part of the AFL's bidding system for father-son and academy prospects.
Rookie list promotions are included among the compulsory minimum of three selections that each club must have at the draft, but the names of these players will not be formally read out at the draft. The Crows have elevated two rookies – Hugh Greenwood and Alex Keath – for Season 2018.
