Adelaide champion Simon Goodwin has been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Goodwin, 40, was the first inductee announced at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday night.
The former captain is the sixth Crows premiership player to enter the Australian Football Hall of Fame following in the footsteps of Mark Bickley, Mark Ricciuto, Andrew McLeod, Darren Jarman and Ben Hart, who was inducted last year.
Goodwin played 275 games for Adelaide between 1997 and 2010.
A talented sportsman, Goodwin captained the South Australian Under-19 cricket team and played league football for South Adelaide in 1995. He was overlooked in the AFL National Draft that year, recruited by the Crows with pick No.18 in 1996 Pre-Season Draft.
The left-footer made his debut in Round One, 1997, and in just his 10th AFL game was part of Adelaide’s first-ever premiership team. He won his second AFL flag the following season.
In 2000, Goodwin evolved from a neat-kicking half-back flanker to a very capable midfielder. He won the first of his three Club Champion awards (2000, 2005 and 2006) and was selected in the All Australian team. Goodwin earned All Australian honours on four other occasions (2001, 2005, 2006 and 2009).
Goodwin assumed the captaincy from good mate Mark Ricciuto ahead of the 2008 season, leading the Club (as captain or acting captain) in 76 matches.
The two-time Showdown Medallist represented Australia in the International Rules series in 2000 and 2001, and played for the ‘Dream Team’ in the AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match in 2008.
‘Goody’ retired in 2010, ranked sixth all-time for games played at Adelaide and 14th for goals (163).
A student of the game and respected leader, Goodwin quickly joined Essendon as an assistant coach. He is currently in his first season as senior coach of Melbourne after taking over from respected mentor Paul Roos.
A Life Member of the Crows, Goodwin was one of eight inaugural inductees in the Club’s Hall of Fame in 2015.
Tuesday night’s Australian Football Hall of Fame presentation was held outside Melbourne for just the second time. Canberra is the only other city to have hosted the event.
