It can’t be easy juggling an elite football career and full time work.

That is what many of Adelaide’s AFLW players do, and in a new BHP Down to Earth series, fans will get a behind the scenes look at some of the players’ lives outside of football. 

From Deni Varnhagen’s nursing career, to Rhiannon Metcalfe’s role as Leading Seaman Electronic Warfare in the Australian Navy, the series will give insight into what players do off the field.

In the first video released on Wednesday, 25-year-old Varnhagen speaks about some of the similarities between nursing and football.

“They are both very team based, you have to work well between a team, have good communication, and a lot of banter which is always fun,” Varnhagen said.

Metcalfe reflects on how she wouldn’t have started playing football if it wasn’t for the Navy. 

“The Navy is where I actually played my first AFL game, so that’s how I was introduced to AFL and it just grew from there,” the Crows ruck said. 

Jessica Sedunary, Courtney Cramey, Justine Mules, Jenna McCormick and Marijana Rajcic are some of the other players featured in the 10-part series. 

The BHP Down to Earth videos will be released weekly in the lead up to and during the 2018 AFLW season on the AFC website, social channels and app.
