Adelaide’s SANFL team could be boosted by young talent in 2019 after the SA Football Commission announced changes to the AFL Clubs’ supplementary lists on Tuesday.
The changes will provide greater pathways for South Australia’s talented young players coming through the system by giving them another chance if they are overlooked for selection on an SANFL list.
There will also be a greater link between Adelaide and Port Adelaide’s Next Generation Academies and their senior teams as members of the Academies become eligible for selection.
A maximum of 10 players will make up the contracted supplementary list, compared to a list of more than 20 during the 2018 season.
Here is the list of players who will be eligible for Adelaide’s supplementary list in 2019:
- Any South Australian player who is aged 19 or older and is not on an SANFL senior list
- One leadership player who is over the age of 26 and has been on an AFL list the year prior
- A maximum of four interstate players aged between 18 and 21 years old
- Next Generation Academy members and Father Sons can receive a permit to play four games if they are aged 18, if they haven’t already played League Football for another SANFL Club
- If they are nominated by Adelaide, Next Generation Academy members and Father Sons aged 19 can play all games for the Crows but become ineligible to play for any other SANFL Clubs
The Crows have already signed their first of the 10 players, with experienced forward Matthew Wright named captain of the SANFL team in 2019 after he retired from Carlton.
Previously, Adelaide’s development squad has been made up of members of the South Australian amateur leagues.
