Crows AFLW forward Ruth Wallace has been recognised at the 2018 NAIDOC SA Awards, which kicked off NAIDOC Week, with the 25-year-old named Sports Woman of the Year

After being drafted to the Crows last year, Wallace made a strong impression in her debut season in the AFLW and has been a role model for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander song, dance and culture will be prominent across South Australia this week, including at the Adelaide Football Club, as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The Awards were one of several events held throughout the week which celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Crows will be part of a number of activities. On Wednesday, July 11, representative teams from the APY Lands and Maralinga Lands will visit the Club ahead of playing in a curtain raiser match on Adelaide Oval on Thursday evening ahead of the Crows’ clash with Geelong.

The 25 young men, some who will be visiting Adelaide for the first time, will have a chance to meet players, tour Club facilities, enjoy a barbecue lunch and take part in education sessions.

On Friday, July 13, a number of Crows players and staff will take part in the NAIDOC March and Family Fun Day.

Commencing at 10.30am, the march starts at Tarntanyangga (Victoria Square) and goes along King William Street to Parliament House.

The Family Fun Day then runs from 11.30am to 3pm at Tarntanyangga (Victoria Square), where the Club’s community team will be running activations as part of the Kids Zone. The event will include stall holders, food and a free concert.

The Club will also hold an education session for staff and players with senior Aboriginal leader Dr Roger Thomas on Tuesday.

Under the theme Because of Her, We Can! NAIDOC Week 2018 runs nationally from Sunday, July 8 to Sunday July, 15.

In February, Adelaide unveiled its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to build on and strengthen its efforts to promote reconciliation in the community, as well as within the Club.

The Plan will operate for the next two years and aims to promote a deeper respect and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Read more about the Plan here.
