North Melbourne’s late comeback was the talking point postgame following Adelaide’s nine-point victory at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Adelaide led by 30 points heading into the final period before Eddie Betts sealed the deal with a goal after the siren. Here is what Kangaroos coach Brad Scott had to say.
On the ‘Roos comeback
While Adelaide hasn’t had a season they would’ve liked, particularly after making a grand final last year, I still rate them as a really good team and they’ve shown that in the second half of the year.
We had an emphasis on taking them on and winning. It wasn’t just let’s fight it out, we set-up to try and score enough to win and we needed to do that. We gave ourselves opportunities. I mean there were a few little technical things late because we had all the momentum running and [if] a couple of things go our way it looks different. We dominated the last quarter for most of it, in the same

On their defensive battles
We started going forward with the ball from half-back. I mean Adelaide defended well but we certainly didn’t make it too difficult for them in the first three quarters. We were just very slow and stagnant, and we had dominant players in the back half. I thought Marley Williams was exceptional on Eddie Betts. Eddie did what Eddie does in the last 10 seconds or so but other than that Marley was just superb.
Majak Daw controlled the aerial contests. We did that well enough but when we got the ball back we just didn’t challenge Adelaide at all. The last 25 minutes we challenged them, and we scored more in that last bit than we looked like scoring for the rest of the game.

On Pyke moving McGovern down back
We certainly didn’t adjust to [Mitch] McGovern. The message was going out with our ball movement, but we just hit Mitch up a couple of times. To his credit, that’s a great weapon as a coach to have, to have someone like Mitch McGovern who can go behind the ball and impact like he did. We would have liked to have directed the ball a bit better.
I can’t blame the players who thought that aggressively going forward and taking the contest was a good option for us, but we just didn’t adjust to McGovern going behind well enough.
