Adelaide utility Zac Taylor says there are two main areas he’s focused on this summer to help put him in contention for Round One selection.

“The main one was fitness over the pre-season,” Taylor said.

“I’ve improved in that space and in the gym.

"Also just trying to play a variety of positions, especially at AFL level, being able to play that forward role and mid-role.”

Taylor, who made his AFL debut in Round 16 last year, believed improved fitness and versatility would hold him in good stead as competition for spots heated up.

“This pre-season I’ve trained more as a forward, just learning the patterns and how the structures roll down that way, because I’ve played midfield for all my years and haven’t ventured down to the forward line,” Taylor said.

“My body has been able to adapt to the training of AFL level. Coming in I was really raw and just figuring out the little things of training from more experienced heads, what they do to get better and get fitter.

“I feel like I’m getting to a point now with a good base of fitness going into playing AFL, I am very confident with how my body is going.

“I’ve really spoken with Darren Burgess and he’s helping heaps throughout the off-season and what sorts of extras I should be doing. He’s someone who has helped me a lot through that journey.”

Taylor spoke to the media at Pirie West Primary School on Thursday, with players set to spend two days in the town as part of the AFL’s 2025 Community Camp program.

The Oak Park product said the importance of meeting young fans in regional towns was not lost on him.

“These fans are really important to us,” Taylor said.

“They love having us out here. I know when I was in school when teams would come over and engage with us it was always one of the best days.

“I reckon it was Essendon (that came to my school) when I was back in Melbourne, I reckon it was David Zaharakis and Brent Stanton.

“It’s pretty special to be here and doing that stuff now.”

Adelaide’s Community Camp will culminate with an internal trial game at Memorial Oval on Friday from 4.30pm, with the match to be livestreamed on the Club’s website.

Taylor said he was keen for the hit-out as players continued to prepare for the Crows’ opening round match against St Kilda on March 16.

“It’s a bit funny versing your teammates, though, bumping each other off the ball and stuff like that,” Taylor said.

“But it’s going to be a big hit-out for selection going into the praccy games and Round One.”
