Senior Coach Don Pyke believes Brodie Smith is best suited to his All Australian post across half-back, but could still feature further up the ground next season.
Smith earned his first All-Australian blazer after a career-best 2014 season, averaging 22 possessions and five marks a game playing as a damaging defender.
The skilful Crow spent more time on the wing this year and could continue to earn more midfield minutes given the addition of versatile pair Paul Seedsman and Curtly Hampton.
But Pyke said Smith’s effectiveness down back remained a valuable weapon.
“I probably see Brodie more as a rebounding defender,” Pyke said in afc.com.au’s exclusive Fans on One feature.
“I know last (season) they explored him a little bit up on the wing, and we’ll probably do the same next year.
“But he’s an All Australian half-back for a reason. I think that’s probably his best spot.”
Pyke praised Taylor Walker’s resilience and leadership as Crows captain when he was introduced as Adelaide’s new Senior Coach back in early October.
Now almost two months into the job, Pyke said it was likely ‘Tex’ would retain the role next season.
“I haven’t seen anything yet that suggests that he (Walker) shouldn’t retain the captaincy,” he said.
“The reports from last year were that he stepped into the role as a new guy and did a really good job in difficult circumstances.
“At this stage I see no reason why he wouldn’t stay as captain.”
Adelaide’s full playing squad returned to training on Monday, with the Club’s 1-4 year players welcomed back a week prior.
Pyke said he’s been pleased with the physical condition of the squad after the offseason break.
“We’ve had a number of guys come back and run some good times in their 2km time trials,” he said.
“Some guys presented themselves really well. I’ve been happy with how the squad’s come back.
“We’re in a good position to get right into the pre-season.”
