Goodwin to miss another week
Adelaide skipper Simon Goodwin will not play against Richmond, after failing to overcome an ankle injury
Goodwin’s ankle mysteriously swelled up last week, with doctors unable to pinpoint the cause of the problem.
The 33-year-old was considered a chance to play against the Tigers this week, but the club has decided against taking a risk with the retiring veteran.
The dual premiership player has been ordered to wear a protective moon boot, but defender Nathan Bock said he was optimistic Goodwin would return next week.
“It was a bit of a mystery injury that popped up with Goody. He got through the game against Geelong really well, but then had a bit of ankle discomfort,” Bock said on Wednesday.
“He seems to be getting around a lot better than he did last week. He was hobbling around a little bit and didn’t look good. I think he’s starting to feel a lot better and he won’t play this week, but hopefully next week.”
Dashing half-back Graham Johncock will join Goodwin on the sidelines, after accepting a one-match ban for engaging in rough conduct against Port Adelaide’s Cameron Hitchcock.
Out-of-sorts forward Jason Porplyzia filled Goodwin’s role in defence last weekend and Bock said he expected the club’s leading goalkicker of last season to remain in defence against the Tigers.
“Having Goody out along with Graham Johncock will leave a couple of big holes there [in defence] that we need to fill,” Bock said.
“Jason played probably the best of all of us down back there. He showed a lot of composure and read the ball well. I think you might see him down there again this week.”
Bock was recalled to the side for last week's Showdown at the expense of emerging defender Phil Davis.
The former rookie said it was a tough call to leave Davis out of the team, but that the club’s prized No.10 draft pick had handled his demotion well.
“It was something that was out of my control. I missed a bit of football and went back to the SANFL. I felt like I had a reasonable game in the SANFL and did everything I could to give Craigy a decision to make,” Bock said.
“As a young guy you go through that where you come into the side, play a bit of football and when senior guys come back into the side you find yourself missing out when it’s probably not warranted. It was a tough decision, but Phil stayed upbeat and positive and trained well. Hopefully, he’ll get his opportunity again soon.”
Ruckman Jon Griffin (ankle) failed to train at Max Basheer Reserve on Wednesday, but is expected to join in the final session of the week on Friday.
Trent Hentschel trained and has been cleared to play this weekend, but forward Brett Burton has been ruled out with an ankle injury.
Chris Knights is rated as a ‘test’ on the club’s official injury list, but Woodville-West Torrens have the bye this weekend meaning both Hentschel and Knights would have to play as a guest for another club in the SANFL reserves.
