Adelaide ruck Jess Allan says she has enjoyed re-establishing relationships with her former and new teammates since returning to West Lakes this season.

The 24-year-old began her AFLW career with the Crows, playing four games in 2018, before relocating to Canberra due to work commitments with the Australian Defence Force, where she also played for GWS.

Allan returned to the Crows this season following a trade with GWS which concurred with her moving back to South Australia for the next phase of her career as a Medical Corps GSO at the RAAF base at Edinburgh.

Speaking to AFC Media, Allan said she had loved working with the Crows midfielders again and forming connections with her new teammates.

“Coming back I had worked with a few of the mids before.

“I have established a strong connection with them with it sort of being my thing to do a bit of extra tap work with a few of them.

“We have a really strong midfield group, so it has been a pleasure to work with them.”

Allan has played all seven games for Adelaide this season, where she has been an important member of the side averaging 8.6 disposals, 22.4 hit-outs and 7.4 hit-outs to advantage a game.

The Crows have used different ruck combinations throughout the season and Allan has split the tap work with Montana McKinnon and Caitlin Gould.

This has allowed her to spend time in the forward line, an opportunity she has enjoyed, as she looked to add to her game.

“I have enjoyed working with Monty as the other ruck and think we work really well off one another,” Allan said.

“It has been nice to rotate forward a little bit, I haven’t done it too much and I would like to get down there a bit more as well.

“That is one thing that I tried to build in the SANFLW to play forward a bit more, so that has been something that I have really wanted to add and build on.”

Allan’s return to West Lakes coincided with a reunion with her sister, three-time Adelaide premiership defender Sarah Allan.

While the pair have been unable to lace up the boots together this season due to Sarah being sidelined with a hamstring injury, Allan is still enjoying getting to spend time with her sister.

“We keep joking about it, we said at the start of the year that we want to win a flag together and that is still the aim,” Allan said.

“She should hopefully be back next week and she has been smashing recovery.

“We still hang out a lot through recovery and training when she is in, so that has been awesome.”

The Crows will enter their Round Eight match against Brisbane undefeated but Allan is expecting a tough battle against last year’s grand finalists.

“I think the beauty of this group is that even though we have won every week, we still week in and week out still re-evaluate the team we are up against,” Allan said.

“Regardless of where they sit on the ladder, we come at it from a very professional point of view but also have a bit of fun with it.

“It will be a big game, but it will be exciting for us to hopefully get another win on the board.

“It will be out in the heat which will challenge us again so it's just another way to test what we have been working on in training.”
