Milestone man Rory Sloane polled a perfect 10 votes from the coaches in Adelaide’s emphatic win over St Kilda on Sunday.
Sloane amassed 30 possessions and kicked an equal-career high three goals in his 100th game. The gutsy midfielder also took nine works, won eight clearances and generated six inside 50ms in his team’s 79-point victory at Adelaide Oval.
Forward Eddie Betts was adjudged the next-best player on the ground, receiving eight votes from Brenton Sanderson and Alan Richardson. Betts slotted five goals to take his season tally to 51 – his best-ever return in a single season. The two-time All Australian also had another four goal assists on Sunday, including a memorable handball to retiring champion Ben Rutten in the final minutes.
Brodie Smith was released onto a wing and amassed an equal-career high 34 disposals to be the leading possession-getter on the ground. The damaging ball carrier broke the lines, generating six rebound 50ms and four inside 50ms. He also kicked a goal and assisted in another to collect six votes from the coaches.
Ruckman Sam Jacobs capped off a remarkable season against the Saints. Jacobs, who earned four votes, won a season-high 49 hit-outs, gathered 14 touches and took four marks. He also sent the ball inside Adelaide’s attacking 50m three times and assisted in a goal.
Defender Daniel Talia received one vote for his brilliant performance on St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt. Talia held Riewoldt scoreless for only the second time in two years. Riewoldt also recorded his equal-lowest possession count (10) this season. Talia finished with more disposals (15) and marks (eight) than his opponent and also assisted in a goal in an incredible individual effort.
Acting co-captain Patrick Dangerfield received the remaining vote. Dangerfield won a game-high nine clearances from 26 possessions. He also sent the ball inside forward 50m six times and kicked a goal.
Dangerfield, who finished on 48 votes, was Adelaide’s highest vote-getter in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award. Sloane (45 votes) climbed to second spot after his perfect game against the Saints, while Smith was the third-best Crow (43). Jacobs, Betts and two-time Club Champion Scott Thompson all polled in excess of 30 votes.
As announced last week, the AFLCA award was won by Port Adelaide forward/midfielder Robbie Gray, who collected 111 votes for the season. Fremantle star Nat Fyfe, who missed the last two matches through suspension, finished second (95). Sydney Swans pair Josh Kennedy (83) and Lance Franklin (80) rounded out the top four.
