Moran pushes West to win
Brad Moran helped lift West Adelaide to its first win of the SANFL season on Sunday.
Strong work in the ruck and around the ground by Moran (18 possessions, 27 hit-outs) was influential in the comeback win over Norwood. He was the best big man on the ground, rucked for most of the match and took some contested marks in defence.
Will Young (10 possessions) made a solid debut for Norwood. He settled down in the second half and had some encouraging moments in defence and, later, in attack.
Brad Symes returned to Central District and was among the many contributors in its big win over Glenelg on Anzac Day. He started at half-back and then moved to a wing and worked hard to get involved in the game, picking up 21 possessions and making seven tackles.
For Glenelg, James Sellar played in defence for most of the match before switching into the ruck late in the game, when he picked up half of his 10 possessions.
Robert Shirley was steady for the Eagles in their win over the Panthers at Woodville Oval. He had 13 possessions on the ball and in the back pocket.
Eighteen-year-old 2008 draftee Shaun McKernan again impressed for the Panthers. Playing in the ruck, he grew in confidence and worked hard to win 26 hit-outs and 13 possessions.
North’s Tony Armstrong (six possessions) struggled to get into the game but Phil Davis (eight possessions continues to grow in confidence in defence.
Sturt’s Brodie Martin did not have the same stats as last round but was still effective across half-back with 17 possessions.
Martin and fellow rookie Chris Schmidt have been named in the SANFL's 29 man state squad to prepare to play Western Australia in Perth on May 23.
SANFL reserves
Ricky Henderson was again impressive for Central District. Playing as a forward, he had 10 kicks and five handballs and booted 1.2. Irish recruit Brian Donnelly enjoyed a switch to the goalsquare with Glenelg, kicking 2.2 from five possessions.
Tom Lee (Sturt) had only nine possessions and kicked one goal but had a strong second quarter at centre half-forward, when he picked up most of his touches.
Greg Gallman (North) had nine possessions and Aaron Kite was probably the pick of this group, collecting 25 possessions for Norwood’s reserves. He played on a wing and at half-back.
