Adelaide recruit Yvonne Bonner says the half-time words of coach Matthew Clarke proved the catalyst for Saturday’s AFLW Showdown victory.
The Crows, who came into the match a hot-favourite, were challenged by a much-improved Port Adelaide side in the first half.
Trailing by three points at the main change, Bonner said Clarke challenged the players to “not go into their shells” after an underwhelming start.
“We knew they had some really good talent and that they were really going to bring a tough contest,” Bonner told the media on Monday.
“At half-time, Doc (Matthew Clarke) just told us to keep playing the game we’re used to playing, we were probably a little bit off in the first half with our execution, but he didn’t want us to go into our shell because of it.
“It was just about getting the game back on our terms in the third quarter, and I think we did a good job of eradicating the errors and playing our style.”
Following Clarke’s address, Adelaide kicked the next six goals and surged to an impressive 30-point triumph.
Fellow Irish woman Niamh Kelly played a pivotal role in the turn-around, gathering 28 disposals, winning six clearances and kicking a goal to win the Showdown Medal.
Bonner spoke glowingly of the influence she has had on her first few months in Adelaide and was thrilled to see her perform so well.
“She is just an amazing person and athlete, she has been so good to our family since we moved here and made us feel so at home,” Bonner said.
“Her performance at the weekend, I am just so happy that she got to showcase to everyone how good she is, because we see it every week at training.
“It was lovely watching her go about her business on Saturday and I can’t wait to see her continue to put up great performances throughout the season.”
Bonner also impressed in her first outing in the tri-colours, kicking two goals and gathering ten disposals.
The 36-year-old said the day was a highlight of her sporting career.
“Looking back on the day it was incredibly special, especially having my family so involved,” Bonner said.
“We had team selection on Wednesday and at lunch time the Club caught me by surprise and brought my daughter Brid and niece to come in and give me a letter that broke the news, a few tears were certainly shed after that.
“After I got the news, the Club then asked if I’d like Brid to run out with us, she was so excited to be a part of that and to have her there with me on the ground made the day.
“To contribute with a couple of goals was nice and it was great to top it all off with a win.”
