Second-year Crow Luke Nankervis had never played as a defender before the 2023 SANFL season.
Adelaide selected Nankervis as a half-forward at the 2021 Pre-Season Draft, but his athleticism agility and fast hands has led him to switching to the backline in 2023.
Now, fast forward to the midway point of Adelaide's State League campaign - the 20-year-old has solidified himself as a reliable and dashing defender.
Speaking to AFC Media, Nankervis said the move down back has been an enjoyable so far.
It's (playing down back) a lot different,” Nankervis said.
“I had never played in defence in my life before this year, so to go back there this year and learn the tricks of the trade has been very enjoyable.
“My aerial work and ability to win contested balls have always been strengths, and I feel I’ve really been able to use those weapons in the back half."
Across the first eight matches of the SANFL season, Nankervis has averaged 18 disposals per game at 91 per cent efficiency.
It has helped the Crows bright 6-3 start to the SANFL campaign.
“It’s gone very, very quickly but it has been really enjoyable in the SANFL and as a team we’ve played some really good footy,” Nankervis said.
“For me it’s just been about growing each week and being consistent with my performances.
“Last year I was mainly adapting to the speed of senior footy, but now with a season under my belt I feel very comfortable against those bigger bodies and I’m a bit more confident.”
Off the field, Nankervis is enjoying living with fellow second-year Crows Josh Rachele and Jake Soligo.
He said the support the trio has given each other has made the transition from Melbourne to Adelaide an easy one.
“It (living with Jake and Josh) has made the move a lot easier,” Nankervis said.
“We get along really well and were all in the same boat coming over from Victoria, so just to have those guys around has been great for me.”
Adelaide has a bye in the SANFL this weekend, before it faces South Adelaide for its Round 10 fixture on Saturday, June 24.
