Adelaide small forward Lachlan Murphy says having the backing of the Crows’ coaches has helped him become more consistent.
Murphy was not picked for the Crows’ Round One match against GWS but proved he deserved to be selected for the next match and has since held his spot.
From his seven games so far this season, Murphy has averaged 15.3 disposals, 13.4 pressure acts and 6.6 contested possessions.
Speaking on this week’s episode of The Crows Show, Murphy said he had worked hard to earn a spot in the team, after missing out on selection in Round One.
“To be able to play my role and contribute to winning has been really nice,” Murphy said.
“Obviously I didn’t get picked for Round One, but to be able to come in Round Two, play my role and put some faith in the coaches and they’ve done the same for me.”
Murphy has played 83 matches since making his AFL debut with the Crows in 2018 but said he still “had a long way to go” to be able to reach the 100-game milestone.
“Just every morning seeing (Matthew) Clarke, (Josh) Jenkins, (Kurt) Tippett, on that locker No.4, just really imagining my name being on that locker is something that means a great deal to me,” Murphy said.
“I’ve still got a long way to go and there’s still a lot of work to be done for me to reach that milestone but it’s definitely a driving force for me.”
Adelaide will enter its match against St Kilda this Sunday with a 4-4 record and is eyeing a return to the winners’ list after losses to Collingwood and Geelong.
Murphy said there were plenty of positives despite the results of the past two weeks, and had confidence in the team’s ability.
“As a team, I think we’ve been solid,” Murphy said.
“The last couple of weeks have been disappointing, to not get the four points against Collingwood and Geelong.
“But I think from previous years, we are definitely seeing our game stacks up with the best.
Also on The Crows Show this week, Jackson Hately sits down with Ben Keays to discuss his Whopper Moment, thanks to Hungry Jack’s, while SANFL Senior Coach Michael Godden also joins to speak about how his side prepares for games each week.
