Adelaide key forward Darcy Fogarty describes the Crows’ Gather Round win against Carlton as “one of the more complete games” he has been involved in.
And there was one key, post-game message delivered from Senior Coach Matthew Nicks, after his side’s 56-point triumph over the previously undefeated Blues at Adelaide Oval.
“It’s probably one of the more complete games we’ve played as a team,” Fogarty said.
“I think everything we wanted to do against Carlton, who are obviously a really good side, we did and it all came to plan, which was nice.
“The overall message (from Nicks) was just how proud he was and I think everyone was pretty proud of the group.
“We showed a lot of maturity in that game against a good side, that came a few times and we were able to hold them off.”
Fogarty enjoyed an electric return to the Crows line-up for Thursday night’s clash, after being sidelined for two matches due to a knee complaint.
The 23-year-old booted five goals, to go with 10 marks and 16 disposals.
But the key forward said he was just happy to be rewarding his teammates’ hard work.
“I think I just got lucky that I was on the end of a couple of good midfield kicks and a good set-up behind the ball,” Fogarty said.
“We were able to get a lot of repeat entries and the midfielders and the backs were able to use the ball well.
“We’ve been working on that for a while now and in the last three weeks we’ve kicked some really high scores with the overall emphasis on our game being defence.
“We know that it can flow pretty well and it’s good fun when everything is clicking like that.”
The Crows and Blues kicked off the AFL’s inaugural Gather Round, with all nine games set to be played in SA across four days.
Fogarty said he also enjoyed playing in front of a packed Adelaide Oval crowd.
“The crowd was unreal and even the Carlton fans were pretty loud and it was good to see a lot of people there,” Fogarty said.
“I think that comes from playing good footy and the fans wanting to rock up and see the Crows play well.
“It’s good to see the fans come out and support us.”
Fogarty said the focus now was to build on the momentum from winning the past three, games, ahead of a Round Six clash against Hawthorn in Tasmania on Sunday.
“We know from the last couple of years that when we play our best footy, finals are a chance but we just need to do that consistently,” Fogarty said.
“That’s what we are building to at the moment and we’ve been able to do that for the past three weeks, so the key now is to keep doing it against the good sides.”
