Adelaide draftee Max Michalanney says his family “erupted” after he became Adelaide’s first father-son selection in a National Draft on Monday night.

And having his new teammate Jordan Dawson and Senior Coach Matthew Nicks knock on his door not long after becoming a Crow is a moment Michalanney says he will never forget.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the defender said he was grateful the Crows matched Sydney’s bid at Pick No.17.

“I was extremely happy to get that done early, I didn’t sleep much the night before, thankfully slept pretty well last night and I’m pretty excited,”  Michalanney said.

“It was pretty quiet, the TV was delayed, so my phone started blowing up about 20 seconds before, but as soon as it happened, everyone erupted and it was a bit of a circus.

“They (Nicks and Dawson) presented me with the guernsey and that was really special.

“They just said ‘we’re really excited to have you at the Club’ and that they’re looking forward to getting me in and starting the work.”

Michalanney was eligible to be drafted by the Crows under the AFL’s father-son rule after his father Jim played 211 games (including four premierships) with Norwood between 1974 and 1986.

The 191cm defender was part of Adelaide’s Next Generation and Father Son Academy this year and played three League games for Norwood including the semi and preliminary finals.

Michalanney said being part of the academy had helped fast track his development.

“Growing up, the whole family supported the Crows, so I guess it’s been a dream come true, not only for me, but also for (my family),” Michalanney said.

“It’s really comforting that I know most of the boys already. I spent about a week down here during the pre-season and then every Monday from then on, so I know most of the boys.

“I was able to join in on match-sim, weights, recovery, they included me in it all, which was really nice of them.”

Michalanney said he would now focus on working hard and continuing to develop.

“It’s been a pretty full in 24-hours, a lot of my mates were messaging me, but I had a good sleep last night, so I’m ready to get into it,” Michalanney  said.

“I’ve grown up dreaming about it, you go to Showdowns each year and just wish you were out there playing.

“Hopefully I’ll be steadily improving and one day I’ll be able to get there, pull on the guernsey and have some fun.”
