Former Crow Chris Knights has become the first signing under Free Agency in AFL history, inking a deal with Richmond.

An unrestricted free agent, Knights was free to join any club of his choice without Adelaide having an opportunity to match the rival club's offer. He has joined the Tigers, where former housemate Ivan Maric landed in trade week last October.

The AFL will determine Adelaide's compensation for Knights, in the form of a draft pick, at the completion of the Free Agency period. Compensation is based on a formula and takes into consideration a club's gains and losses throughout the Free Agency period.

Knights, 26, played 96 career games in eight years at Adelaide but only five matches this season.

Last week, Knights informed Adelaide of his plans to explore free agency.

Crows general manager of football operations Phil Harper thanked Knights for his service to the Club.

“It has been a difficult year for Chris as he has struggled to get a regular game with our team. However, his effort to remain positive, upbeat and ready to take his next opportunity has been a credit to his character," Harper said.

“The Club wishes Chris all the best in his future football endeavours and beyond his football career, when he will always be welcome as a past Adelaide Football Club player.”

From TAC Cup team the Eastern Ranges in Victoria, Knights was drafted by Adelaide with pick No.56 at the 2004 national draft. He enjoyed a career-best season in 2009 when he kicked 43 goals. His 2010-11 seasons were marred by injury.
