Adelaide SANFL forward Isaya Mckenzie says becoming a father almost two years ago changed his life for the better.

McKenzie and partner Alannah have two children Joaquin, who will be two in November, and Vienna, seven months.

The 25-year-old’s Father’s Day this year will be a little different, with McKenzie set to celebrate it by lining up in Adelaide’s SANFL Semi-Final against North Adelaide.

Win, lose or draw, McKenzie says seeing his two children smile after a game is what matters most.

“(Being a father) puts everything into perspective,” McKenzie told AFC Media.

“You’re responsible for two little kids, your whole life revolves around them and you just want to give them the best life.

“There’s nothing I want more than to see my kids after a game - win, lose or draw - I’ve still got my kids who are always going to be there.

“I remember how special that day (Father’s Day) was for my father and now I’m receiving those gifts and getting the nice cards, it’s great.

“I just want them to enjoy life. I guess I always stress about footy and work and stuff but in the end I just want to be best known for being a good person and a good father.”

“(Being a father) puts everything into perspective.

McKenzie, a former Central District player, completed half a pre-season with West Coast in 2020 with the hope of being picked up in the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period.

But an ACL injury sustained during training left him sitting on the sidelines for the entire season and he returned to SA, before lining up with Willaston Football Club in the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association in 2021.

He then signed with the Crows’ state league side this season and played 11 matches, including last weekend’s Qualifying Final win against Norwood.

McKenzie expected this Sunday’s contest against North Adelaide to be tough and said winning a SANFL flag would be a dream come true.

“Growing up, I always wanted to play at the highest level of footy, I obviously didn’t get that chance to play AFL, so SANFL is a very high, competitive competition,” McKenzie said.

“I’ve never played SANFL finals before and I never thought I would, to be honest. I was playing out in the country and thought my League career was done.

“I’m just embracing the moment and I’m loving it.

“North has such a good coach, a good coaching staff and really good players, so it will definitely take our best that’s for sure.”

Adelaide takes on North Adelaide in a Semi-Final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, with the first bounce at 3.15pm.

The winner will gain direct entry into the Grand Final, with the loser to play the winner of the battle between Norwood and Glenelg.
