Star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield has been recognised by his peers for an outstanding season, finishing equal-fifth in the AFL Players Association Most Valuable Player award.

Dangerfield polled 256 votes to finish level with Sydney onballer Josh Kennedy. Gold Coast skipper Gary Ablett (788 votes) took home the Leigh Matthews Trophy awarded to the Players MVP for a record-breaking fourth time.

Essendon captain Jobe Watson finished runner-up on 602 votes, while young players Trent Cotchin (495 votes) and Dayne Beams (377 votes) were also acknowledged for breakout seasons.

The fifth-placing in the League's only peer-voted award is further recognition for Dangerfield, who was one of five Crows included in the 2012 All-Australian squad announced last week. He also finished equal-third in the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year award.

Ablett is the first Gold Coast Suns’ player to win the trophy having won it three years running while at Geelong in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

In other awards presented on Tuesday night, Jobe Watson was named the league’s best captain, ahead of Joel Selwood and Matthew Pavlich.

Selwood also featured in the Robert Rose Most Courageous Award, where he tied for victory with West Coast defender Beau Waters. Respected St Kilda champion Lenny Hayes followed closely.

The Best First Year Player Award was taken out by Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Cameron, while mature aged recruits Dayne Zorko and Ahmed Saad finished second and third respectively.

Alan Toovey was awarded the Education and Training Grant, presented by Open Universities Australia, while Emma Quayle won the Grant Hattam Trophy for Excellence in Sports Journalism.

The voting process for the 2012 ALPA MVP was as follows:

The process to determine this year’s MVP began as it has in previous years, with each team voting for those three teammates that, in their view, have displayed the best overall value to their own team. In a second round of voting, all AFL players must vote in a 3, 2, 1 preference from the list of 51 nominees (three players from all clubs excluding their own) to determine the MVP.
