AFLW veteran Erin Phillips says a stinging Grand Final loss and desire to return to form have driven her push for season 2022.
The two-time All Australian and two-time premiership player underwent a knee clean-out at the conclusion of last year’s season after suffering a cartilage injury in Round Five.
But Phillips, 36, said she never considered slowing down.
“That Grand Final, as much as it was really disappointing, we did get a really good lesson from that and that’s made us a smarter, stronger Club,” she told AFC Media.
“It goes to show that it’s such a tough competition and, on any given day, anyone can be beaten.
“It was a big push on why I wanted to go again… having an injury and losing a Grand Final, I still felt like I could give more to this team and this Club.
“It’s a long road, but I know this team can get it done.”
The experienced athlete has been working through a modified program through the beginning of pre-season, but will return to full form closer to the 2022 opener.
“A slow build up for the seasoned athlete… AKA old,” Phillips joked.
“My build is a little bit slower than these young kids but I’m feeling really good, running really well and hopefully will be out on the track full training in a couple of weeks.
“A bit of running, conditioning and skills... just not in contact at the moment, so that’s the last bit of it.
“Then the shackles come off and I’m back out there with the girls, I can’t wait.”
After six seasons with the Crows, Phillips said one thing helped keep her enthusiasm for the game alive.
“All players say that they’re excited about their team, but I love watching the young kids come through,” Phillips said.
“Their enthusiasm to be here and take the Club forward is exciting to watch.”
