Adelaide-born golfer and Crows Ambassador Adam Scott has become the first Australian to win the US Masters.
Scott defeated 2009 champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina with a birdie at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off. The 32-year-old appeared to have the green jacket within his grasp after sinking a long-range birdie putt on the 18th hole, but Cabrera matched Scott’s effort to force a playoff.
Joint runner-up of the prestigious tournament two years ago, Scott showed nerves of steel as he holed the winning putt from four metres on Augusta National’s 10th hole after Cabrera narrowly missed his birdie putt.
‘‘It seems a long way away from a couple of years ago here and even last July when I was trying to win another major,” Scott said after his dramatic triumph.
‘‘It fell my way today. There was some luck there somewhere. I don’t know how to digest it at all at the moment but it was incredible.
‘‘It’s incredible to be in this position. I’m honoured.’’
An Adelaide Football Club Ambassador since 2004, Scott finished with a final-round 3-under-par 69.
He is the 10th Australian to win a men’s major, the first since Geoff Ogilvy in the 2006 US Open.
Aussie compatriot Jason day, who Scott tied with in second spot in 2011, finished in outright third.
