While Adelaide’s Brodie Smith has nothing but praise for Brownlow winner Ollie Wines, the defender didn’t shy away from a few hilarious jabs at his fellow Crows. 

Midfielder Rory Laird topped Adelaide’s count on Sunday night, with 16 votes, followed by breakout player Ben Keays (11 votes) and forward Taylor Walker (nine votes). 

Speaking on Adelaide radio on Wednesday evening, Smith couldn’t help but sneak a cheeky dig at fellow Crow - and close mate - Laird, for his Club-leading performance. 

“Lairdy is always happy with his votes and lets us know pretty quickly all the games he should’ve got more votes in,” Smith joked. 

“If you ask Lairdy he should’ve got 25-30.”

“Our other mate Tom Doedee got the nod ahead of me and didn’t poll, so I’ve been into him all week.

“He was sitting at the Brownlow and his name didn’t get called out, so he was a bit stiff, Tommy. 

“I’ve brought it up a couple of times this week but he hasn’t given me much back, so I think he’s a bit flat.”

Smith also echoed the sentiment of former Crow Bernie Vince, who told Triple M the Brownlow had become a ‘midfielders’ award’. 

“It was a good count, wasn’t it? Very high scoring. I thought (Clayton) Oliver was home late, but Wines had a great finish and (was) a very deserving winner,” Smith said.  

‘(But) if we can get a half-back’s award going, that would be nice… if someone outside the midfield could score some points, that’d be good. 

“I think he (Walker) had a game there where we had about 23 touches and kicked five or six and just got the one (vote), so that was a bit surprising, he should’ve been a bit further ahead, I think.”

Awards aside, Smith said he had been impressed by the young Crows’ off-season efforts.  

“We had about 10 of us running this morning and a few of our young boys are going very, very nicely already, so it’s good signs,” he said. 

“Harry Schoenberg, big Filthy (Riley Thilthorpe) and Chayce Jones were absolutely flying this morning, so us old guys were just trying to hold on.”
