The newest additions to the Crows AFLW side stepped up in Adelaide’s 20-point win over Fremantle in Saturday night’s trial match at TIO Stadium.
Chloe Scheer, 19, impressed in her first hit out in the tricolours, opening Adelaide’s account just minutes into the first quarter and backing it up with her second in the third term.
Basketball convert Jessica Foley was heavily involved in the match, including a goal just inside the second half.
In her hometown, Danielle Ponter was a strong presence in the backline, despite being new to the role.
“I thought some of our new players had an impact, Danielle Ponter was strong in defence and Chloe had an impact up forward,” new coach Matthew Clarke said post-match.
“We know Chloe has great talent when the ball is in her hands, but she provided some great pressure up forward too, so it was a great night for her.”
“(Danielle) has such a beautiful kick so we figured she’d be really useful in taking the ball forward.”
He said he was also pleased with the effort from Sophie Li and Renee Forth, who came to Adelaide during the off-season from Carlton and GWS respectively.
At half-time, Adelaide led by ten points and relentless pressure kept the Dockers goalless in the third term.
A solitary Crows goal in the final term courtesy of Erin Phillips saw Adelaide take the game 9.4 (58) to 5.8 (38).
“I was really pleased with the way the girls played in tough conditions but particularly through that third quarter their pressure and intent was really strong,” Clarke said.
“At times we lost our structure a little bit ahead of the ball and also behind at times but overall their work-rate and contest was outstanding.”
After being assisted off the field in the second quarter, Adelaide ruck Rhi Metcalfe missed the remainder of the game due to a knee injury.
Jasmyn Hewett also left the game early with an ankle injury.
“Unfortunately, we got a couple of injuries, which sort of soured the night a little bit,” he said.
“The challenge of the night is that we got two injuries, both in our ruck stocks, unfortunately we don’t know the full extent of either [injury] at this stage”
“Really disappointing for both girls who have worked amazingly hard through pre-season and both started the game well.”
Clarke said the Club would have to wait until both players had undergone scans to know more.
The Crows will return to the training track in Adelaide this week, with an open training session at Norwood on Wednesday.
