David Mackay is set to become a one-club player after resisting the lure of Free Agency and re-signing with the Crows for a further four years.
Mackay, 26, will remain at Adelaide until at least the end of 2018. Recruited with pick No.48 in the 2006 National Draft, the damaging wingman has played 120 games.
Mackay said he was rapt with the prospect of playing out his career with the Crows.
“I’ve spent a big part of my life at Adelaide and I’m really excited to be spending a bit more time here. I absolutely love playing for the Club and all the people involved. I’ll most likely be a one-club player now and that’s pretty special to me,” Mackay said.
“It was a decision I had to make with my family. We discussed it and in the end I couldn’t envisage myself playing with any other club, so in that sense it was a pretty easy decision.
“I’m really excited and bullish about what this group can achieve. We have a lot of young talent on our list and I think we have great young people as well, who work really hard. We’re a very close-knit group. Our coaches are young and enthusiastic as well and have great relationships with the players.
“From what I can see, all the ingredients are here for something special and I certainly want to be part of it. It would give me no greater satisfaction than to have success with the people at this Club and for our supporters, who have been great to me and all the boys.”
Mackay, who has played all bar one match through injury, is enjoying arguably his most consistent season to-date. He’s averaged 18.5 possessions, kicked nine goals and is using his biggest weapons – his speed and skill – to the advantage of the team.
He follows running defenders Brodie Smith and Ricky Henderson and exciting forwards Josh Jenkins and Charlie Cameron in committing to the club this year.
Crows Head of Football David Noble said the length of Mackay’s new contract reflected his standing at the Club.
“David shares our vision and direction, and is a quality person and footballer,” Noble said.
“He does not seek the limelight but his class is on show most weeks.
“His signature is yet another show of faith in what we are doing and how our list is developing. There is no doubt he is a crucial part in this Club’s push to achieve the ultimate success.”
Mackay, who endured an injury-interrupted start to his career, was confident his best was yet to come.
“I’ve had battles with injury and form over the time, but I’m improving as a player every year and I certainly think my best footy is still ahead of me,” he said.
“I’ve got myself in a position where I know how to manage my body properly. I still think I have a fair bit of improvement in me as a player. This is the best environment for me to be able to showcase that, improve and get to the level I think I can reach.
“The Club has had great faith in me and I want to be able to do that for them.”
