One of the Adelaide Football Club’s greatest defenders Ben Rutten will retire at the end of the 2014 AFL season.
Rutten, 31, finishes his career as a one-club player, having established himself among the most reliable full-backs of the modern era.
He has currently played 225 AFL games, but his tally will grow as the Crows pursue a finals berth in coming weeks.
Rutten, affectionately known as ‘Truck’, decided this season would be his last several months ago.
“I always wanted to finish up while I was still contributing to the team and matching it with the best forwards,” he said.
“No doubt the time is right, and I leave knowing the Club is blessed with a talented and motivated playing group, which is destined for success.”
Overlooked in two national drafts, Rutten was selected with pick 40 in the 2002 rookie draft.
The former West Adelaide junior made his AFL debut against Fremantle in Round 16 the following year. He kicked three goals with his first three kicks at the elite level.
He was named All Australian in 2005 and has finished top three in the Crows Club Champion award on two occasions (2005 & 2011).
Rutten counts the many friendships and finals appearances as highlights of his 12-year AFL career.
“Playing finals football is what I cherish and will miss most,” he said.
“I am grateful for the support of so many people along the way at the Crows, and am proud to call myself a one-club player.”
Senior Coach Brenton Sanderson describes Rutten, who is keen to pursue a career in coaching, as a valuable contributor both on and off the field.
“Truck has had the better of many of the best forwards over the years,” he said.
“His ability to adapt and keep up with the changes in the game has been first class.
“In recent times, his mentoring work with our young defenders has been invaluable.
“They will be better players for having worked with Truck.”
