The coaches couldn’t find room in their votes for any Crows at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.
Led by former Central District defender Lee Spurr, Fremantle players received all 30 votes on offer from Brenton Sanderson and Ross Lyon after a convincing 40-point win over Adelaide.
Spurr collected an equal-game high 32 possessions while holding Eddie Betts goalless to earn a perfect 10 votes in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award. Skipper Matthew Pavlich received six votes for his three-goal performance, while big-bodied midfielder David Mundy, who also had 32 touches to go with five clearances, was awarded four votes.
As the dominant ruckman on the ground, Aaron Sandilands received three votes along with wingman Danyle Pearce. Star onballer Nathan Fyfe, who helped drag the Dockers back into the contest after quarter time, collected two votes. Rebounding defender Paul Duffield and line breaker Stephen Hill each earned one vote.
Eight votes to Gary Ablett (63 votes) in Gold Coast’s loss to Sydney saw the Suns skipper extend his lead at the top of the overall leaderboard after 12 rounds. Swan Josh Kennedy, who was awarded five votes against Gold Coast, is in second spot on 57 votes. Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury is a further five votes behind (52) in third spot. Patrick Dangerfield, who has polled 32 votes, is Adelaide’s highest-ranked player and sits just outside the top 10.
