Patrick Dangerfield has moved into the top 10 of the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award after polling votes in Adelaide’s loss to Melbourne.
Dangerfield and in-form Crow Brodie Smith both received four votes from coaches Brenton Sanderson and Paul Roos at Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Dangerfield amassed 25 possessions (19 contested), seven inside 50ms, six clearances and kicked 2.2 in his team’s three-point defeat. The influential midfielder didn’t poll a vote in the opening four rounds of the season, but has rocketed up the overall leaderboard with 23 votes in the last three games.
Smith continued his individually brilliant season, gathering a career-best 30 disposals, eight running bounces, seven marks and five inside 50ms. Daniel Talia was the only other Crow to collect a vote. The 2012 Rising Star held Demons swingman James Frawley goalless and was rewarded with two votes.
Melbourne midfielder Dom Tyson (seven) was the highest vote-getter. The trade-week recruit impressed with 29 possessions and a goal. Former Crow Bernie Vince polled six votes against his old team after winning 26 possessions and nine clearances, while forward Chris Dawes (20 possessions and three goals) earned five votes. Smalls Neville Jetta and Jay Kennedy-Harris, who each received one vote, rounded out the voting.
Five votes in Gold Coast’s win over North Melbourne helped Gary Ablett extend his lead at the top of the overall leaderboard. Ablett (45) is now 11 votes clear of Geelong captain Joel Selwood (34) and Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury (33).
