Adelaide’s finals hopes have been rekindled, but the Club must rely on results of several games across the weekend to sneak into eighth place.

Eighth spot on the AFL ladder opened up on Tuesday night following the AFL Commission’s decision to ban Essendon from playing finals and relegate the Bombers to ninth place.

The Crows’ finals fate will depend on results AND percentage.

Adelaide will play finals if EACH of the following occurs:

Adelaide beats West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night

AND

Port Adelaide beats Carlton at AAMI Stadium on Saturday

AND

The combined total of Adelaide and Port Adelaide’s wins must exceed 10 goals (approximately, depending on scores for and against in each match) for the Crows to move above the Blues, who already have 10 wins and a better percentage (107.0) than Adelaide (103.7).

AND

Geelong beatsBrisbane at Simonds Stadium on Saturday

AND

Collingwood beats North Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday

Carlton currently occupies eighth spot. The Blues will cement their spot in September if they can overcome Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Even if Mick Malthouse's men lose, they could still qualify for the finals, providing the Brisbane Lions go down to Geelong at Simonds Stadium, North Melbourne loses to Collingwood at the MCG, and neither West Coast or Adelaide makes up a considerable percentage gap when they clash at Patersons Stadium.

The Lions also have 10 wins and can make the eight if they beat the Cats and Carlton loses to the Power. If Carlton and Brisbane both win, the Blues are in the box seat to claim eighth spot because of the Lions’ poor percentage (89.1).

The Kangaroos have the best percentage (120.2) of any of the five teams vying for eighth spot and will secure the final place in the top eight if Carlton and Brisbane lose and neither Adelaide nor West Coast win by enough to overtake them on percentage.

The Eagles can also finish eighth if each of the other contenders lose and they thump Adelaide by in excess of 100 points.
